A Narrative Inquiry into Emotional Experiences in the Growth Processes of Adult Twins

Abstract
This study set out to develop and broaden the general understanding of twins by exploring adult twins' emotional experiences in their growth processes and analyzing the significances of their psychological acknowledgement by using the method of a narrative inquiry. Specific purposes of the study are as follows. First, 'What is the emotional experiences of six adult twins in their growth processes?' Second, What implication can be found from six adults' emotional experiences of their growth processes? The study method was carried out according to the procedure of Narrative Inquiry, which is centered on research participants with actual experiences and reconstructs the meaning of experiences. In-depth interview was conducted for beginning of four months by six adult twins participants ages from their twenties to forties, and additional data was collected by telephone, email, and letters for following four months. The interpretations throughout the data analysis are as follows. Twins share common environments including their mother's wombs, and they can be cooperative, dependent each other but sometimes they can be competitive and jealous by comparing one and other. The twins, on the other hand, pursues their own individualities and independences, and these qualities are reinforced and supported by emotional acceptances and endorsements from other important persons such as parents. The study shows that the life experiences of coexistence of twins help them to understand and empathize other members of society and it becomes their strengths. The significance of this study is can be used as a resource to develop the understanding of twins, such as parents who are raising twins, teachers who are educating, and twins in helping them understand their lives.
